8th Annual benefit for Hope Fund of Penns Valley

Wow! Our 8th year paying tribute to the amazing and oracular Anthology of American Folk Music, the Rosetta Stone of pre-war American Roots Music.

We are so lucky to have this amazing Headliner this year- FREAKWATER, coming up out of Asheville, Louisville and Chicago, will be our Saturday night opener/headliner. See: http://www.freakwater.net/. Freakwater will be releasing a new album – their eighth – in the spring on the Bloodshot label, and they’ll be playing as a 6 piece.

The band has been playing since the late 1980s when they emerged out of the ferment of Louisville’s punk rock scene. Fronted by Catherine Irwin and Janet Beveridge Bean (also of Eleventh Dream Day – which just put out a great new album a month or so ago, “Works for Tomorrow” on the Thrill Jockey label), and joined by David Gay, the band and the songwriting represent a completely unique vision and approach to Americana. Hugely (even criminally) under-recognized, Freakwater is nonetheless a major presence on the landscape of outsider country and the American alternative aesthetic imagination.

This year’s Harry Smith Festival involves seven bands, including Freakwater and host band Chicken Tractor Deeluxe, each doing a short sets (5-8 tunes) of songs from the Harry Smith Anthology.

The Harry Smith Festival is a benefit for the Penns Valley Hope Fund (www.pennsvalleyhopefund.com), a lvery worthy ocal grassroots organization that provides emergency assistance to local people facing sudden and unexpected need.

This year’s line-up features…

Miss Rosie (great young string band from Ohio)
Gnarled Knuckles String Band (great older string band from a couple valleys north of Milheim)
Allegheny Bilge Rats Shanty Choir (great pirate/old time band from a couple of valleys south of Millheim)
Skip Bosco (duo from the Baltimore area)
Chris Rattie & The Brush Mountain Rumblers (local roots rock band
Freakwater
Chicken Tractor Deluxe (host band)

Please mark your calendars…
