BARNES | GORDY | WALSH featuring Danny Barnes!
Danny Barnes, the roots music legend and recent winner of Steve Martin’s Prize for Excellence in Banjo, is teaming up with two young creative voices of the acoustic world: mandolinist Joe K. Walsh and guitarist Grant Gordy. This new trio of Barnes, Gordy and Walsh draws on a wide array of influences, its members collectively keeping feet in the rock, bluegrass, jazz, avant garde and electronic worlds.

“Danny Barnes is an inspiration to me”, lauds acclaimed guitarist Bill Frisell, and indeed Barnes’ output as a soloist and a master collaborator with the likes of Frisell, Dave Matthews, Steve Martin and countless others has cemented his standing as one of the “open secret” greats of American music. From the days with his groundbreaking Austin band, the Bad Livers, to his two decade solo career experimenting with electronic music, jazz, old time string band music and more, he’s a genre bending, rule breaking original who prefers to color outside the lines.

Now, with Stove Up, just out March 3, 2017, he’s showing us that it was always a choice, that he’s always had the chops to play straight ahead bluegrass banjo with the best of them. With a top-flight band backing him up, Danny turns in an amazing set of tunes that demonstrate his respect for tradition and his commitment to his own musical voice.

Joe K. Walsh has been hailed as “one of the best mandolinists of his generation” by the CBC and has toured extensively with bluegrass royalty such as Darol Anger, the Gibson Brothers, and Scott Nygaard. Guitarist Grant Gordy spent 6 years touring with the progressive David Grisman Quintet and his playing, according to Just Jazz Guitar magazine, “rewrites the book on crossover bluegrass/jazz/flatpicking guitar”.

A radical acoustic triune, Barnes, Gordy and Walsh push out the corners of what is possible/advisable as a folk trio, and propel each other to intriguing creative spaces at every turn.
